How you get the yips:
Firstly, without exception, you will have a flaw in your technique that causes poor shots. This gradually becomes more ingrained and as this flaw in your technique gets worse you start to compensate for this in other areas of your setup and or stroke. You continue to get worse until you know you are not going to hit a good shot and eventually it gets into your head. You become jumpy when hitting your shot, you have a very poor mental attitude and you end up dreading a shot before you even get to your ball. You then get into a horrible circle of bad shots causing more dread leading to more bad shots… and so on.
Throughout the time that golf pro’s have been teaching chipping and pitching, I believe that they have been teaching players incorrectly in many facets of the technique. Here is list of the few basics that many people teach and that PGA’s across the world are insisting young coaches learn:
• Hands forward at address. Why? This de-lofts the club and causes a steep angle of attack.
• Ball back in the stance. Why? You don’t do this on any other shot and goes against the natural downward arc of the club head.
• Stance open. Why? If you think about it can you name any other target sport or any other part of golf where you don’t aim at your target? This makes it very difficult to get the arms swinging through and down the target line
• Hit steeply down on the ball. Why? This will de-loft the club, give unpredictable spin and also mean that you either catch the ball perfectly or if you are a fraction out hit it fat or thin.
The technique that I use for coaching chipping and pitching disregards all of these ideas. The reason for this is that all of these ideas contribute to, or can cause by themselves, the golfer to develop the yips in their game.
How to get rid of The yips:
I firstly start by identifying the flaws in your technique that started the process in developing your Yips. With this fault corrected I then introduce you to your on specific Unyippable technique which when done correctly will be impossible to Yip from. You then start onto a positive cycle of hitting good shots, gaining confidence, and then hitting better shots and getting even more confidence. You then believe it or not actually start looking forward to playing these shots to prove to yourself and others that you have conquered your Yip and can now play these shots wonderfully.
